AU8830 Windows Vista Driver Version 5.12.2568.1 README.TXT
=======================================================================
This is the Vortex2 AU8830 Windows Vista driver version 5.12.2568.1

These drivers have been specially modified from the 5.12.2568.0 beta
build to provide limited support for the AU8830 chipset in Windows
Vista. A3D support is *un-tested*. These drivers have only been modified
sufficiently enough to allow Windows Vista to accept them for
basic sound functionality.

Windows 2000/2003/XP users are advised to continue using the
5.12.2568.0 version of the drivers -- this version provides no new
features or updated driver binaries, and is only supported in
Windows Vista.

I. Overview
=======================================================================

A. WINDOWS SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

	15mb of installation space
	Windows Vista (any edition)
	Aureal 8830 Chipset sound card

B. NEW FEATURES:
This section lists new features incorporated into the Vortex
     drivers.

A3D 3.0 support (Stereo output only; untested in Vista)

DirectSound 7.0 support for WDM (Stereo support only)

S/PDIF support (Stereo support only; untested in Vista)

	Working Aureal Toolkit (requires Patch file be installed;
	unconfirmed in Vista)

New 4mb Wavetable Soundfont (port of Creative's 4mb soundfont
	file; NOT USED in Vista)

SQ3500 Turbo DSP module support (untested in Vista)

C. DRIVER ISSUES:

	No Quad speaker support

	No EAX 1.0/2.0/3.0 extension support

	No IDL2S extension support

No ZoomFX or Sensura3D extension support

Driver was modified to work only on Vista (9x/ME/XP/2000
systems may have problems with these drivers)

Aureal Wavetable has poor sound quality sometimes. Only
solution is to adjust volume levels after starting
	applications.

S/PDIF output is PCM only (no AC3 support)

Vista uses software wavetable emulation instead of hardware.

II. Software Installation
=======================================================================

A. DRIVER INSTALLATION
	1. If Windows Vista is prompting you for drivers with a
"Found New Hardware" dialog, select "Ask me again later".

	2. If you have not done so already, extract the driver files to
a folder you will easily be able to locate (for example, a
	   sub-folder on your desktop).

	3. Open "Device Manager (from the "Hardware and Sound" category
of the Windows Vista Control Panel).

	4. Under the "Other devices" device category, locate
"Multimedia Audio Controller". Right-click it and select
	   "Update Driver Software...".

	5. Select "Browse my computer for driver software"

	6. In the "Search for driver software in this location:" box,
provide the path to which you extracted the driver files in
	   step 1.

	7. Click "Next".

	8. At the "Windows Security" dialog, select "Install this
driver software anyway". This prompt is the result of the
custom drivers not having a digital signature, and is not a
	   cause for concern.

	9. When the additional "Found New Hardware" dialogs appear,
again select "Ask me again later" for each one.

       10. Click "Close" in the "Update Driver Software" wizard window.

       11. Within "Device Manager", under the "Other devices" category,
locate the first "Multifunction device". Right-click it and
	   select "Update Driver Software...".

       12. Repeat steps 5 - 10.

       13. Repeat steps 11 & 12 for the second "Multifunction Device"
	   shown in Device Manager.

       You should now have sound.

B. UNINSTALLING THE DRIVERS

	1. Launch the "Vortex 8830 Applications" uninstaller from the
Add/Remove Program in the Windows Control Panel.

	2. In Device Manager, under the "Sound, video and game
controllers" category, locate the "Aureal Vortex2 SQ2500"
device. Right-click, select "Uninstall", place a checkmark
in the box entitled "Delete the driver software for this
	   device", and click "OK".

	3. In Device Manager, under the "Sound, video and game
controllers" category, locate the "Aureal Vortex Game Port"
device. Right-click, select "Uninstall", place a checkmark
in the box entitled "Delete the driver software for this
	   device", and click "OK".

	4. In Device Manager, under the "Multifunction Adapters"
category, locate the "Vortex Multifunction PCI Parent"
device. Right-click, select "Uninstall", place a checkmark
in the box entitled "Delete the driver software for this
	   device", and click "OK".
